Therapeutic Relations I
Overview
- Phases of the nurse-client relationship
- Core therapeutic conditions of warmth, respect, genuineness, and empathy
- Communication strategies such as open and closed questions, use of silence, normalization, shame attenuation, paraphrasing and summarizing
- Assertive and responsible communication
- Self-awareness
- Confidentiality
- Professional boundaries
- Mental Status Exam
Experiential communication formats are used, including interactive communication scenarios, video critiquing, and participative self-awareness exercises.
The course evaluation is consistent with ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵ Evaluation Policy. An evaluation schedule is presented at the beginning of the course.
This is a graded course.
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
1. Understand the phases of the nurse-client relationship;
2. Demonstrate therapeutic conditions of warmth, respect, genuineness, empathy, and concreteness;
3. Demonstrate communication strategies such as open and closed questions, use of silence, normalization, shame attenuation, paraphrasing, and summarizing;
4. Demonstrate assertiveness and responsible communication;
5. Demonstrate self-awareness and the relationship to therapeutic communication;
6. Understand concepts of confidentiality, professional boundaries, and providing feedback;
7. Understand and integrate the Mental Status Exam.
