Academic probation

Students are expected to uphold minimum academic standards throughout their studies. While no one begins their post-secondary journey anticipating academic probation, challenges and unforeseen circumstances can sometimes lead to it. If you find yourself in this situation, know that you are not alone—ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵ provides a range of support services designed to help you regain your academic footing and improve your standing.

What is Academic Standing at ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵ?

Academic Standing is based on a minimum of 9 credits of attempted ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵ course work and reflects a student's overall academic performance, based on grades and adherence to college policies. It determines whether a student is in Good Standing, on Academic Alert, or on Academic Probation. Maintaining good academic standing is essential for staying enrolled and progressing toward graduation at ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵ.

Academic standing is evaluated at the end of each term once final grades have been submitted. For details, refer to the Academic Performance Policy.

There are 3 categories of Academic Standing:

Good standing

Students who achieve a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 1.50 or higher in all ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵ coursework are considered to be in Good Academic Standing.

Academic Alert

If your term or CGPA falls between 1.99 and 1.50, you will receive a written notification from the College, that you are on academic alert.

  • This alert serves as a reminder that your academic performance needs improvement to avoid academic probation.
  • You will be encouraged to take advantage of available Student Support Services, to help you succeed.

Academic Probation

If your CGPA drops below 1.50 (after attempting at least 9 credits), you will be placed on academic probation and notified of your status in writing.

  • First-time academic probation: You must meet with your Student Success Advisor (SSA) or a ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵ Counsellor. A registration hold will be placed on your account, which will prevent you from registering in courses for a future term and will not be removed unless you meet with one of these support staff.
  • Ongoing academic probation: If you continue on academic probation for more than one term, you must meet with your SSA. A registration hold will be placed on your account, which will prevent you from registering in courses for a future term and will not be removed unless you meet with your SSA.
  • To regain good academic standing, students must achieve a CGPA of minimum 1.50.

ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵ is committed to supporting students on their academic journey. Our Student Success Advisors, Counsellors and Student Support Professionals are here to help you get back on track and succeed.

What happens if I continue on academic probation?

Raising your CGPA can feel challenging, but you do not have to navigate it alone -- Student Success Advisors and other support services are available to guide you.

While on academic probation, your course registration is limited to nine credits per semester until your CGPA reaches 1.50 or higher. If probation continues across multiple terms, you will need to develop a detailed academic plan, which may involve further restrictions on credit loads and specific actions to improve your academic standing, as outlined in the Academic Performance Policy.
