Overview

Course Description
This practicum provides students with the opportunity to apply health data coding and classification standards using ICD and CCI. Students will analyze and apply coding guidelines in acute care facilities or through simulation at the college.
Course Content
  • Examine the classification of diseases and interventions from a variety of acute care patient records
  • Apply classification guidelines in compliance with CIHI standards
  • Explore methods of collection and presentation of health data in the acute care setting
Learning Activities

Students will learn principles and practices of health information classification through a combination of experiential learning, independent study and instructor feedback.

Means of Assessment

Course evaluation is consistent with the ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵ Evaluation Policy. An evaluation schedule is presented at the beginning of the course. This is a mastery-graded course. All assignments must be completed to pass the course.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, successful learners will be able to:

  • Analyze documented health information for acute care patients;
  • Apply disease and intervention coding principles in accordance with the Canadian Institute for Health Information standards;
  • Practice data collection and capture using the electronic data abstract;
  • Analyze data integrity and the impact this has on data classiifcation;
  • Apply basic pharmacology principles to facilitate data classification.
