Overview

Course Description
This two-week extramural session focuses on classification of diagnoses and interventions using ICD-10-CCCA/CCI from current health records for specific body systems. Students will attend, primarily in groups, an an acute care health care facility under the supervision of a faculty member or designate.
Course Content
  1. Practice classification of diseases and interventions from a select variety of health records in a health care facility using ICD-10-CA/CCI classification systems.
  2. Practice completion of an abbreviated manual version of the discharge abstract.
  3. Participate in tours, demonstrations, and other relevant activities.
Learning Activities
  1. Continuous feedback provided by a faculty member to the participant during the process of coding and abstracting.
  2. Discussion of performance
  3. Group discussion.
  4. Guest lecturers/tours/demonstrations
Means of Assessment

Typical evaluations would include:

  • Self-Assessment
  • Reflective Learning Journals
  • Test Cases
  • Productivity

 

Course evaluation is based on course objectives and is consistent with ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵ Curriculum and Development approval policy. 

A detailed evaluation schedule is presented to the student at the beginning of the course.  Outline of evaluation may be subject to change.

This is a graded course.

Learning Outcomes

In this course students attend a local health care facility to practice skills in data classification and abstraction.  The participant will have opportunity to:

  • at an entry-level proficiency, be able accurately and consistently classify common diagnoses and interventions from select current health records
  • maintain and enhance appreciation for the importance of data integrity
