New Ƶ partnership with Simon Fraser University opens doors for future B.C. teachers

A new transfer agreement between Ƶ and Simon Fraser University (SFU) will help Classroom and Community Support (CCS) students access the undergraduate education required to become a teacher – without having to start from scratch.

CCS graduates who began in or after September 2022 can now transfer 45 out of 60 credits from their diploma program to seamlessly enter the second year of the Bachelor of General Studies (BGS) in the Faculty of Education at SFU.

“This partnership provides a critically needed pathway to supporting education professionals on their professional learning journeys,” said Dr. Robert Williamson, Director of Undergraduate Studies at SFU’s Faculty of Education. “Bringing amazing educators into our B.C. classrooms requires a coordinated and cooperative approach across the province, and we are excited to welcome transfer students from the CCS program at Ƶ to SFU where their journey will continue.”

The Classroom and Community Support program focuses on inclusive classroom practices and support for learners with disabilities. Students gain specialized knowledge and skills to support the meaningful inclusion of individuals with disabilities in educational settings and beyond.

“This partnership has a direct, positive impact on public schools in the province, where there is a strong demand for teachers and educational assistants with the philosophical foundation and practical skills needed to facilitate inclusive spaces,” said Kelley Young, CCS program instructor and co-coordinator at Ƶ. “Our graduates receive the foundation they need to become effective educators who can support all students toward success in the classroom.”

With online offerings and evening classes, the two-year CCS program allows students to earn an Education Assistance and Inclusion Certificate through their first year of studies. They can then continue complete their second year of learning while working in local school districts or community-based programs.

Applications to the CCS program are still open to domestic students for Fall 2024. Learn more about the Classroom and Community Support Diploma program
